Barks & Rec

Take a Shelter Dog on an Adventure!

Experience a Barks & Rec Field Trip

Experience a Barks & Rec field trip with Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh. Our Barks & Rec Dog Field Trip Program gives shelter dogs a much-needed break from the kennel and lets volunteers make a big difference in just a little time.

These short outings are all about fresh air, happy paws, and connection. Whether it’s a walk through your neighborhood, a drive-thru pup-cup run, or simply relaxing in the backyard, your time together helps a dog de-stress and shine outside the shelter — giving them a better shot at finding their forever home.

Why it Matters

Every Barks & Rec adventure helps our dogs build confidence, enjoy a change of scenery, and connect with people in new ways. The experience not only helps them feel happier and more relaxed – it also gives our team valuable insight into how each dog behaves outside the shelter, helping us match them with the right family.

A Few Ground Rules for the Field Trip

To keep every outing safe and stress-free for our dogs (and yours):

  • Please don’t allow your field trip dog to interact with other animals.
  • No off-leash dog parks or meet-and-greets.
  • If you have pets at home, keep them separate during your visit.
  • The person who applies should be the one holding the leash.
  • Friends and family (ages 10 and up) are welcome to tag along!

Not ready to adopt? That’s okay. Your photos, videos, stories, and social posts still help connect these amazing dogs with families who are.

FAQ: Get Started with a Barks & Rec Field Trip

Barks & Rec is HARP’s field trip program for adoptable dogs. Volunteers take shelter dogs out for short outings — walks, park visits, drive-thru pup cups, or even cozy backyard chill time — to give them enrichment, exercise, and socialization outside the shelter.

Anyone 10 or older can join, though children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers must be the person holding the leash during the outing. Friends and family are welcome to tag along!

No experience is required! We provide a short instructional video covering safety, supplies, and pick-up/drop-off procedures, and our staff is always here to guide you.

To keep everyone safe, dogs on Barks & Rec outings should not interact with other animals. This means no dog parks, no meet-and-greets, and any pets at home must stay separated.

Trips can be a few hours, just enough time for the dog to enjoy a fun adventure and a little human attention. The earliest pic-up time is 10:00 am, and the latest drop-off time is 3:00 p.m. This allows our dogs to be on site for morning walks, meals  (and medications, if needed) and they’ll be back in time for dinner!

Absolutely! If you fall in love, our team can help you start the adoption process. Even if adoption isn’t in the cards, sharing photos and videos of your outing helps connect dogs with their future families.

It’s easy! Watch the instructional video, submit a quick application, schedule your field trip, pick up your pup, and enjoy your adventure. Don’t forget to share your photos using #harpsaveslives!

Nothing! We make sure you have everything you will need for the outing.  Leash, treats, poop bags… we’ve got you covered,
