Experience a Barks & Rec Field Trip
Experience a Barks & Rec field trip with Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh. Our Barks & Rec Dog Field Trip Program gives shelter dogs a much-needed break from the kennel and lets volunteers make a big difference in just a little time.
These short outings are all about fresh air, happy paws, and connection. Whether it’s a walk through your neighborhood, a drive-thru pup-cup run, or simply relaxing in the backyard, your time together helps a dog de-stress and shine outside the shelter — giving them a better shot at finding their forever home.
Why it Matters
Every Barks & Rec adventure helps our dogs build confidence, enjoy a change of scenery, and connect with people in new ways. The experience not only helps them feel happier and more relaxed – it also gives our team valuable insight into how each dog behaves outside the shelter, helping us match them with the right family.

A Few Ground Rules for the Field Trip
To keep every outing safe and stress-free for our dogs (and yours):
- Please don’t allow your field trip dog to interact with other animals.
- No off-leash dog parks or meet-and-greets.
- If you have pets at home, keep them separate during your visit.
- The person who applies should be the one holding the leash.
- Friends and family (ages 10 and up) are welcome to tag along!
Not ready to adopt? That’s okay. Your photos, videos, stories, and social posts still help connect these amazing dogs with families who are.
