The Journey of a Red-Tailed Hawk at HARP’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center

A Story of Rescue and Recovery

In May 2024, a young red-tailed hawk was brought to our Wildlife Rehabilitation Center under dire circumstances. At just 36 days old, he had become orphaned and was discovered in a critical state, battling severe emaciation and dehydration. The hawk’s condition was grave, and he needed immediate, intensive care to survive. This fragile bird was at the mercy of the elements and faced immense challenges without the guidance and protection of his parents. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, our team sprang into action, providing the nurturing care and specialized treatment he needed. HARP Wildlife Rehabbers helped him quickly regain his strength and embark on the path to recovery.

Flight Training and Preparation

Once stabilized, the red-tailed hawk entered a crucial phase of his rehabilitation: flight training. Moved to our specialized flight cage, he practiced flying and hunting in an environment that simulated the wild.

The spacious cage allowed him to build strength and endurance while honing his agility and confidence in the air. He also engaged in hunting exercises to develop his predatory skills, essential for finding food in the wild. Our team supported his progress, gradually reducing human interaction to prepare him for an independent life.

This critical stage ensured the hawk had the physical abilities and instincts needed to thrive in his natural habitat.

A Triumphant Return to the Wild

At the end of July, this red-tailed hawk successfully returned to his home territory in Jeannette, PA. After weeks of dedicated care and rehabilitation, he was ready to take the final step: returning to the wild.

On the day of his release, our team transported him to a carefully chosen location within his home range. As we opened his carrier, he took flight with a powerful and graceful ascent into the sky.

Fully recovered and strong, the hawk is now soaring through the skies and exploring his natural habitat. His successful return marks the culmination of our efforts and the resilience of this remarkable bird, now contributing to the balance of nature in his native environment.
