SUMMARY:Animal Tales
DESCRIPTION:Reading to Shelter Animals in Pittsburgh\nBack by popular demand! Animal Tales is a program in which children ages 4-17 can read to adoptable animals at HARP’s East Side shelter! \nThis program aims to provide socialization and enrichment for the animals in our care\, increasing their wellbeing and adoptability. In the process\, our readers build confidence in their literacy skills and learn lessons about animal interactions and body language that will last a lifetime. \nParticipants attend an orientation (along with their grown up) to learn all about our HARP shelter\, the domestic animals here\, and the keys to observing animal behavior. Once you and your child attend an orientation\, they can sign up for as many or as few assigned dates to come read to the animals! Children can bring their own books (or choose from our collection) and then read to animals whose kennels are marked with a “Read to me next!” sign. \nPricing: \n\nOrientation – $10 per child (one-time fee)\nEach Reading – $7 per reading session\n\nOther notes: \nAllergens: We do our best to make our programming a safe and inclusive space\, but be advised that there may be allergens present at our facility (like pollen\, animal dander\, and nuts). \nAccessibility & Inclusivity: We would like to offer one Monday reading session a month (in addition to the two other sessions) to provide a more sensory-friendly experience (since the shelter is closed to the public on Mondays). This program is welcoming and inclusive of people of all reading abilities\, so please let us know if your reader may require any special accommodation. \nRegister for an orientation and the reading sessions online via our Active Network software (click the button below). Note that registration for April & May readings will be available on March 1st! \nPlease read these expectations below before registering for the program. The benefits for the animals and readers are endless! To set everyone up for success\, check out our FAQ below to understand more about what to expect! \nWhat animals will we be reading to? \nCats and bunnies are the most common animals to read to at Animal Tales\, but occasionally dogs\, turtles\, guinea pigs\, ferrets\, and more have also participated in the fun! Our adoptable animal population is always changing\, so we can never guarantee any specific individual or type of animal will be available. \nWill we be playing with the animals? We have special volunteer roles (such as cat cuddlers\, dog walkers\, small animal enrichment\, etc.) who play with and pet the animals\, so our reading role is a special one to enrich them in a totally unique way! We carefully designed this program around a calm activity (like reading from the outside of the kennels) to encourage a paws-itive environment by reading “bedtime” stories at the end of the day.Why are there time slots and a session capacity? \nWe have a max capacity for the number of readers in each session to ensure there are enough animals for everyone to read to and to make sure there aren’t too many people overwhelming the adoption areas at once. \nCan I read without attending an orientation? All readers must attend orientation to learn about animal body language and behavior\, understand the expectations of the program\, and get a tour around the adoption floor. Orientations are held early on to ensure everyone has a chance to attend as many of the 12 reading sessions as possible. If you are waitlisted or discover the fun after orientations have passed\, sign up to be on our mailing list to get notified as soon as the next season dates are released!Safety and Dismissal There are rules and signage in place to keep both the patrons and animals safe and healthy. We take these precautions seriously\, so we reserve the right to dismiss anyone from the program who we feel is unable to follow these guidelines.Register for Orientation AND Reading Here
