DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! Animal Tales is a program in which children ages 4-12 can come and read to animals in the East Side shelter! \nParticipants attend an orientation to learn all about our HARP shelter\, the domestic animals here\, and the keys to observing animal behavior. Once they attend an orientation\, they can sign up for as many or as few assigned dates to come read to the animals! Children can bring their own books (or choose from our collection)\, grab a carpet square\, and then read to animals whose kennels are marked with a “Read to me next!” sign. \nThis program not only helps to socialize the animals in our shelter to help expedite their adoption\, but also helps children improve their confidence and literacy as well. \nRegistration is through our online Active Network software. This program is welcoming and inclusive of people of all reading abilities\, so arrangements can be made for anyone 13-17 with learning delays.

DESCRIPTION:To help “spread the love” this Valentine’s Day\, Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP) will host a special “Hearts and Paws” dog food distribution event to make sure that no dog goes hungry. Owners in need can drive up to the North Side Campus (1101 Western Avenue\, Pittsburgh PA 15233) on Monday\, February 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. where staff will then load each vehicle with free dog food.\n\nIf pet owners are facing difficulties in providing for their pets\, HARP is committed to helping keep pets in loving homes and has resources available. Through our pet retention programs\, families who are experiencing difficult times are given assistance to avoid the further heartbreak of losing their beloved pet. Making sure that no pet goes hungry\, Ellie’s Pet Pantry supplies community members with food and basic supplies for their pets\, assisting those who are experiencing financial insecurity and struggling.\nIn 2021\, Ellie’s Food Pantry provided over 72\,000 pounds of food through regularly scheduled and emergency distributions.\nFor more information about assistance or to learn how you can support Ellie’s Pet Pantry\, go to humaneanimalrescue.org/programs-services/ellies-pet-pantry/

DESCRIPTION:Every spring\, hundreds of baby wildlife\, some injured and abandoned\, arrive at the center. In preparation for the new arrivals\, Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP) will host a Wildlife Baby Shower to help stock up on supplies needed for the busy season ahead.\n\nRather than an in-person event\, the public is invited to virtually participate in the Wildlife Baby Shower on Saturday\, April 9. Gifts from our wish list and monetary contributions will ensure the smallest animals get the care they need to grow healthy and strong.\n\n“While our Baby Shower is virtual this year to ensure everyone’s safety\, our need is just as great”\, said Katie Kefalos\, Director at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. “Support from the public is vital to our efforts to give the hundreds of baby wildlife\, from raccoons and bunnies to squirrels and owlets\, the chance to survive and thrive.”\n\nSupplies that may be donated for the Baby Shower include common items that can be found in your local grocery store like paper towels\, canned mixed fruit\, and unsalted nuts. Other specialty items include digital kitchen scales\, knitted nests and pruned tree branches. Items may be dropped off at HARP’s East Side (6926 Hamilton Avenue)\, North Side (1101 Western Avenue) or Wild Side (6000 Verona Road\, Verona) locations or donors may select items from our Amazon Wish List for delivery to the Wildlife Center.

There may even be a chance to meet one of our Animal Ambassadors and learn all about how the choices that we make every day affect the world around us. This event is designed for families (and friends) to attend together; there is no age limit on crafting or on learning! \nDate & Time:  \n\nFriday\, April 29\, 6 – 7 p.m.\n\nPricing: \n\n$15 per child (4-17 y/o)\n$12 per adult\nKids 3 and under are free!\n\nRegistration: \nClick here to register. \nLocation: \n\n6000 Verona Road\, Verona PA 15147\n\nOther notes: \n\nAllergens: We do our best to make our programming a safe and inclusive space\, but be advised that there may be allergens present on our facility (like pollen\, animal dander\, and nuts). We will provide popcorn\, but any participant with a food-related allergy concern is welcome to bring their own alternative snack.\nCOVID Protocol: The safety of our community\, patrons\, and staff are very important to us\, so we have a COVID safety protocol in place. Our safety protocol is guided by recommendations from the CDC and includes:\n\nMasks are optional\, but encouraged\, for attendees\nProper social distancing will be observed when applicable\nRegistration is limited to 20 individuals per session\nStaff will ensure proper and frequent sanitizing of surfaces and limiting shared materials

DESCRIPTION:Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP) will host a special  dog food distribution event to make sure that no dog goes hungry. Owners in need can drive up to the East Side Campus (6926 Hamilton Avenue Pittsburgh\, PA 15208) on Monday\, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. where staff will then load each vehicle with free dog food.\n\nIf pet owners are facing difficulties in providing for their pets\, HARP is committed to helping keep pets in loving homes and has resources available. Through our pet retention programs\, families who are experiencing difficult times are given assistance to avoid the further heartbreak of losing their beloved pet. Then this event is for you! Talk a walk on the wild side at Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center to learn all about the fascinating world of Wildlife Rehabilitation. \nDuring this program\, we will take a tour of the outside portions of our facility\, which specializes in caring for sick\, injured and orphaned native PA wildlife. Our fully licensed wildlife facility admits more than 4\,000 animals of over 130 unique species annually\, with the goal of releasing them back out into the wild. \nThis event will also include a visit from an animal ambassador and a rehabilitation-themed hands-on activity. \nHumane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP) is one of PA’s largest non-profit organizations dedicated to the welfare of animals\, pet owners\, and the community through both our domestic shelter and wildlife center locations. The Humane and Wildlife Education Department will facilitate this event. The department aims to be a resource for the community by providing interactive and accessible programming\, with the goal of inspiring and preparing the next generation of environmental stewards and animal advocates.
